Young Carers Awareness Day – 28 January 2016

Did you know that there are an estimated 17,000 young carers in East Sussex?

Young carers are children and young people under 18 years old who give unpaid care to a family member who is physically or mentally ill, disabled or misuses substances.

Young Carers Awareness Day is a national day of recognition for the 700,000 young carers in the UK who work around the clock providing care and support to family and friends.

We want to use Young Carers Awareness Day to get everyone talking about the thousands of carers who are so often unidentified, and who miss out on vital services and support they are entitled to.

To tie in with raising awareness of young carers, Adult Social Care and Health and Children’s Services have also launched new ‘Working Together’ policy and guidance which aims to better support them and their families.

With the general awareness and understanding of young carers increased, children and young people with caring responsibilities should then be more easily identified and helped, along with their families, to access the right support.

We are working with East Sussex Young Carers who support the estimated 17,000 young carers here in East Sussex aged 5-18.

East Sussex Young Carers will be holding events around the county in Kids Stuff Toys shops on the 28th January so pop along, meet the team and find out more about what the East Sussex Young Carers service does whilst the children play on the craft table, or to offer your time to volunteer.
